Certification Overview
Certification of Fluid Power and Motion Control Professionals is an Industry-wide Program of Education,
Training, Testing and Recognition. Certification of Fluid Power and Motion Control Engineers, Specialists, Technicians, and Mechanics is a program established by the Fluid Power Certification Board
and administered by IFPS.
Fluid power certification consists of an optional review sessions, followed by a three-hour
written test and recognition upon successful completion. For Mechanic and
Technician Certification, an additional three-hour job performance test is also
required. All certifications are valid for five years, at which time
recertification will be required. The Fluid Power Certification Board currently
offers the following Certification Tests:
Cell phones may not be brought into the testing room.
You may bring any hard or softbound, copyrighted fluid power
reference book. It is permissible to have notes written in your books,
either in the margins or on designated notes pages You may also
bring a non-programmable calculator. You may not bring in
any loose sheets of paper, laminated cards, spiral notebooks or
three-ring binders of notes. The study guide, answer manual, and
pre-tests issued by the Fluid Power Society may not be
used as reference materials during the test.
The Certification Program is built upon the solid foundation of:
- Accredited educational institutions providing teaching and proctor-monitored testing, along with Accreditation for a "Teach-the-Instructor"
Program. - and -
- Accredited Instructors who provide education, training, and proctor-monitored testing of candidates for Certification.
Instructional Aids include a series of:
- Fifteen newly-written Reference Manuals, Self-Study Manuals and written and hands-on tests prepared and scientifically field-tested by leading Fluid Power educators according to the highest educational standards for the Specialist and Mechanic programs.
Certification Skill Levels (all related to Fluid Power and Motion Control Technology) are briefly described as follows: (For complete description, refer to descriptions being prepared for the U.S. Department of Labor's Directory of Occupational Titles, document #2.1.6).
- Engineer:
- takes engineering responsibility for fluid power designs, products and processes.
- Specialist:
- designs and applies systems, and instructs.
- Technician:
- troubleshoots systems, researches, and tests.
- Mechanic:
- maintains and repairs systems.

Please Note: All Technician and Mechanic Tests as well as Connector &
Conductor Test require the completion of a
hands-on Job Performance Test in addition to the
specific written test itself.

All testing is conducted under the direct supervision of proctors retained by the Fluid Power Certification Board. The only exception is the Hands-On Mechanic Certification Test which is conducted and graded by an Accredited Instructor.
Accredited Instructors
Recertification
All categories of
certification are valid for a period of five (5) years upon passing each
test.
To renew your certification, the Fluid Power Certification
Board requires ongoing experience and/or education in the fluid power
industry. This policy governs the procedure whereby the individual certified
may recertify for another five-year period following the close of the initial
certification period granted upon passing of the test.
